Cliff Skeen CBCF for Women Receives National Accreditation

The Cliff Skeen Community Based Correctional Facility (CBCF) for Women managed by Oriana House, Inc., earned a perfect score on its reaccredidation audit by the American Correctional Association (ACA).

The accreditation process involved a two-day, on-site visit by ACA auditors who reviewed 251 standards, met with Oriana House staff, and interviewed offenders in the CBCF program. The Cliff Skeen CBCF scored 100% on its mandatory and non-mandatory audit requirements.

“In all my years of doing audits, I do not believe that I have ever heard more positive feedback from residents than I did at this facility. They were very enthusiastic regarding the treatment programs, the staff and how they believe this program has made or is making a difference in their lives,” said ACA auditor Michael Youngken.

The CBCF program provides a highly-structured and secure community sanction for felony offenders and offers chemical dependency treatment, academic assessments and opportunities, community service, and employment training which are all imperative to the rehabilitation of offenders. Research shows that carefully screened offenders can be diverted from prison to controlled community supervision settings without compromising the safety of the community and with significantly higher success rates.

Offenders sentenced to the CBCF usually complete the program in four to six months and are involved in a multi-tiered treatment plan. There are four phases of programming and offenders are given more responsibilities as they progress through the phases.

In presenting the awards, Robert Garvey, chairperson of the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections and Gwendolyn C. Chunn, president of the ACA, complimented James Lawrence, president/CEO of Oriana House, and his staff on their professional level of operation and their success in completing the accreditation process.

The Cliff Skeen CBCF for Women opened in 2001 and is located at 941 Sherman Street in Akron. Other facilities/programs operated by Oriana House that are accredited by ACA include: Summit County CBCF, Home Incarceration, Day Reporting, Residential Institutional Probation, Terrence Mann Residential Center, Residential Correctional Center, CROSSWEAH CBCF in Seneca County, and Oriana House Community Corrections and Treatment Center in Cleveland.
