Oriana House Celebrates 20th Anniversary
On Tuesday, September 25, 2001, Oriana House, Inc., will celebrate its 20th
anniversary. Since 1981, Oriana House has provided community corrections
programming and chemical dependency treatment to more than 154,000 people
through its facilities in Summit, Cuyahoga, and Seneca counties. Anniversary
activities include a dinner featuring the nationally-renowned theatrical
presentation, Legacy of Hope. Proceeds from the event will benefit a scholarship
fund for a student studying criminal justice or chemical dependency treatment at
The University of Akron. Oriana House has also arranged for Legacy of Hope, an
engaging and original performance that emphasizes the impact of chemical
dependency treatment, community corrections, and healthy choices, to be
presented to the entire student body at North High School. Legacy of Hope will
perform at North High School, 985 Gorge Blvd., Akron, from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Following the performance the presenter will visit classrooms and be available
to talk with students. The anniversary dinner will be held at St. Joseph's
Family Center, 610 West Exchange Street in Akron. 5:00 p.m. Open house displays

non-profit community corrections agency with a primary focus of helping the
criminal justice system deal with driving-while-intoxicated offenders. Today,
Oriana House encompasses more than 20 programs that provide a sanction while
assisting offenders in developing the skills they need to become productive
members of the community. "Effective sanctions, treatment and training have
a positive impact on our community," said Jim Lawrence, president/CEO,
Oriana House. "For the past 20 years we've had the honor of sharing in
individual success stories. It's been very rewarding to see first-hand how
community corrections and chemical dependency treatment can improve lives and
our community." Oriana House assesses offenders for chemical dependency
treatment needs and offers programming that addresses those needs, including
relapse prevention and cognitive skills development. Offenders are assisted in
securing gainful employment and/or participating in educational opportunities.
Offenders also accept responsibility by performing community service. Oriana
House works with more than 40 separate agencies to develop community service
projects, and over 67,000 community service hours were performed by individuals
who were active in Oriana House programs in 2000. Oriana House also offers
specialized programs for women, families, juvenile boys, and mentally ill
offenders. In addition to community corrections programs, Oriana House also
contracts with the County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health
Services (ADM) Board to manage a voluntary, medically supervised, detoxification
unit. Oriana House also manages Midtown Apartments which provide housing for
adult homeless and low-income individuals in Summit County.
