Three Oriana House Programs Receive Re-Accreditation
The Residential Correctional Center (RCC), Terrence Mann Residential Center
(TMRC), and the Residential Institutional Probation Program (RIP) were awarded
their re-accreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA). RCC,
TMRC, and RIP are operated by Oriana House, Inc. Oriana House is a private,
nonprofit, community corrections and chemical dependency treatment agency based
in Summit County. Programs available at RCC, TMRC, and RIP include the halfway
house program and the work release program. Research shows that carefully
screened offenders can be diverted from prison or jail to controlled community
supervision settings without compromising the safety of the community and with
significantly higher success rates. The accreditation process involved a
two-day, on-site visit by ACA auditors who reviewed 251 standards for each
facility, met with Oriana House staff, and interviewed offenders in the each of
the programs. In presenting the award, Robert Garvey, chairperson of the
Commission on Accreditation for Corrections, and Gwendolyn C. Chunn, ACA
president, complimented Oriana House President/CEO James Lawrence and his staff
on their professional level of operation and their success in completing the
accreditation process. ACA standards address services, programs, and operations
essential to effective correctional management. Through accreditation, an agency
is able to maintain a balance between protecting the public and providing an
environment that safeguards the life, health, and safety of staff and offenders.
Standards set by ACA reflect practical, up-to-date policies and procedures and
function as a management tool for agencies and facilities throughout the world.
Jon Galley, chairperson of the ACA audit team wrote in the audit report that
this was one of the most professionally operated facilities that these auditors
have ever been in. He also commented on how the staff are committed and involved
in what they do, and that they are knowledgeable, helpful, and effective. “The
re-accreditation confirms that Oriana House is operating and providing
programming above the national standards,” said Bernie Rochford, executive vice
president of Oriana House. RCC is located at 222 Power Street in Akron and
houses female offenders. TMRC is located at 55 East Glenwood Avenue in Akron,
and RIP is located at 40 East Glenwood Avenue in Akron. Both TMRC and RIP house
male offenders. Other facilities/programs operated by Oriana House that are
accredited by ACA include: the Summit County Community Based Correctional
Facility, the Cliff Skeen CBCF, Home Incarceration, Day Reporting, Oriana House
Community Corrections and Treatment Center in Cleveland, and the CROSSWAEH CBCF
in Tiffin, Ohio.
