Collaborative Event Planned to Clean-Up Community
The University Park Development Corporation and the University of Akron's
Greek Programming Committee, with financial support from the University Park
Alliance and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will be working
together on Saturday, October 18 to clean-up and beautify the University Park
area of Akron. The University Park Development Corporation (UPDC) is a nonprofit
corporation that exists exclusively to develop, promote and improve the human,
economic, organizational, physical and environmental conditions of the
University Park neighborhood in Akron. The University of Akron's Greek
Programming Committee regularly helps coordinate and provide volunteers for
community service projects. The UPDC 2003 Fall Clean-Up Campaign will kick-off
at Midtown Apartments, 219 East Market Street at 9:00 a.m. From there,
volunteers from the Greek Programming Committee and businesses, residents and
organizations who are part of the UPDC will target the areas of East Market and
East Exchange streets for trash pick-up. In addition, a special project is being
planned at Grace Park to replace a broken metal plaque memorializing Marine
Lance Corporal Richard Thomas Culp, of Akron, who died in the Vietnam War with a
new commemorative plaque. Flowers and mulch will be added to the memorial area
as well. The University Park area within the city of Akron occupies
approximately two square miles, with a northern boundary of the Little Cuyahoga
River above North Street, a western boundary of Dart Avenue, a southern boundary
of the I-76 expressway, and an eastern boundary of North Arlington Street.
Oriana House, Inc., a nonprofit agency that provides community corrections
services and chemical dependency treatment, has had a representative on the UPDC
Board for more than five years and has provided collaboration for this event.
Three of Oriana (MORE)
House's residential facilities are located in the University Park
neighborhood. Tenants from Midtown Apartments, an apartment complex operated by
Oriana House for homeless individuals, will be participating as volunteers for
the UPDC 2003 Fall Clean-Up Campaign. More than 50 volunteers are expected to
participate in the Clean-Up Campaign. T-shirts will be provided to all
volunteers and appreciation prizes will be awarded as well. Anyone who is
interested in volunteering for the UPDC 2003 Fall Clean-Up Campaign can call
event coordinators, Christine Savage at (330) 535-8116 or Charlotte
Holcomb-Nelson at (330) 291-1550.
