In March 2000, Oriana House embarked on a new level of service to provide
housing for adult homeless and low-income individuals in Summit County. Oriana
House partnered with Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA) to begin
managing Midtown, a former hotel in Akron. Midtown has been converted to 91
single-room occupancy units and is owned by AMHA.
AMHA’s responsibilities include providing rent subsidies, verifying income
of prospective tenants, determining each tenant’s rent, background checks on
prospective tenants, and providing security officers.
As managers of Midtown, Oriana House is responsible for locating/contacting
prospective tenants, collecting rent, entering lease agreements with tenants,
and property maintenance.
In its first year, Midtown Apartments had an occupancy rate of 92% and crime
reported at the building had decreased by 66%. Staff and residents at Midtown
have participated in the neighborhood/city clean up campaign and have planted
flowers to beautify the area.
Referrals come from Akron Metropolitan Housing, homeless shelters in
Summit County, and various social services agencies throughout the county.
Midtown is located at 219 East Market Street. Alcohol is prohibited on the
premises.
